Motoring title What Car? has listed the 10 most and least frugal models you can buy today using its own ‘true MPG’ tests based on real-world driving on town roads, rural routes and motorways.

As you might imagine, large SUVs and sports cars dominate the list of vehicles with the lowest miles per gallon (MPG) figures, though it isn’t just teeny city cars that have the most efficient at sipping petrol and diesel.

Economical motoring: The VW Up might be small, but the turbo version is plenty mighty enough when it comes to fuel economy and makes it into the top 10 of most efficient new cars The VW Up TSI has a real-world fuel return of 53.7mpg.
